Social Media Elements

Element One: Value-Adding Social Networks

One of the most important elements of your strategy should be to join networks that actually add value to your plan. Just because a social network has the most users doesn’t mean that it’s right for you. Don’t try to jump on the bandwagon just because others are having success with a particular social network. Instead, try to determine which network will do the best for your particular product or service.

Every network is different and each one can work for an organization differently.

For example; Facebook has more active users than any other social network on the planet. Nearly one-and-a-quarter bill people use Facebook every single month, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s right for every brand. If you want to create awareness, posting relevant and valuable content on your news feed can certainly help, but it might not be the best way to interact with customers and build a relationship. For that, you should probably use Twitter, because the level of interaction there is much more personal. However, Twitter isn’t quite as large of a network as Facebook.

Of course, you should probably have a presence on these two networks regardless, since they are not only ways to network with customers, they are also beneficial for a brand’s image. As for the others, LinkedIn is specifically designed with B2B marketers in mind while social networks like Pinterest and Instagram are perfect for incorporating visual media, and of course, YouTube is the social network of choice when it comes to video content.

Element Two: Customer Service

This should be a very important part of your social media strategy because when customers have a problem and they take it to social media, it isn’t just them that you are risking alienating when you don’t acknowledge the grievance or take steps to fix it. Their message could be seen by others, shared by thousands and could turn into a very bad public relations incident for you. Make sure that you take customer service into consideration in your plan.

Use Social Media for Marketing

Element Three: Marketing

Most people think of marketing first when they consider social media strategy, and while it is an important element, it is not the most important one. However, a brand new way to approach this strategy is to think of novel ways to make people aware of your company and excited about what you have to offer. If you are launching a new product or service, or you have a brand new campaign that doesn’t involve social media, the platform is a great way to spread the news.

Element Four: Research & Development

Social media is the perfect research tool. You already have a group of people that are interested in your product. There is no reason not to use those people as a focus group for products that you are launching or considering.

Asking for feedback is one of the most beneficial things that you can do and the best part is, these fans will be willing to provide this valuable information completely free of charge. In fact, if you create the right campaign, you can offer a valuable discount for answers to a poll on your website and generate revenue at the same time.

Element Five: Relevant, Engaging Content

Your content is probably the most important out of anything else you do on social media. What kind of value are you providing to your customers? Are you giving them tips, guides or useful information of some kind? Are you entertaining them? Make sure that your content gives them value and limit your promotional posts to no more than 20 percent.
