1. Learn new functions

Sometimes managing social media can feeling like treading water. You only have just enough time to check all your notifications, curate content, and post, without taking time to learn all the new features of the different platforms.

Last year saw the release of Facebook Live and Instagram Stories, as well as a few other updates across other social sites. If you’ve not yet wrapped your head around these new features and functions, now is the time. Resolve to bring yourself up to speed and to stay abreast of the changing landscape.

2. Finally create that schedule

Social media best practise is rooted in prior planning and thorough scheduling. However, if you created your business social media accounts on the run and had them operating before the importance of social media in marketing and business really became apparent, you may have missed the boat on developing a methodical strategy.

Now is the time to rectify it and plan from this point forward. No more flying by the seat of your pants, it’s time to go back to square one and game this out properly.

3. Tidy up loose ends

Take time in early 2017 to go back over your account, look at it with an objective eye, fill in the blanks and tidy up the loose ends. Make sure your branding is cohesive across all accounts and that you’ve got all of your basic information where you need it.

It’s surprising how much of the foundations of a solid social media presence are overlooked, especially when accounts were set up years ago when the platforms were different and our understanding of social media marketing was in the dark ages.

4. Connect with more influencers

This year, make a point of reaching out to influential individuals and organisations in your field. Connect with more journalists, develop an online relationship with social media influencers, and create cross-promotional opportunities on social media.

5. Respond quicker

It’s often something that most businesses need to improve on, responding to online communication in a more timely fashion. If you’re finding that people who tweet, message, or tag you are waiting days for a response, try to knock that time down to less than a day.

6. Post more

It’s a basic one, but it’s a great social media resolution for 2017. Make time in your day to post more. Either start with just posting links to content you like, or start from the top and try to create and post as much original content as you can. Whichever way you go about it, just do it!

7. Grow your email subscriber list

Set a target number of subscribers you want on your email list this year and set about making it happen. With everything you do online this year ask yourself ‘will this grow my mailing list?’ At the same time focus on making your email newsletters top quality to keep all those new subscribers.

8. Use more images

Images are the most effective way to get social media content noticed and engaged with. Resolve to ensure that each post is visual.

9. Review your metrics

Once again, stop thinking about it and start doing it. Resolve to understand metrics and review them regularly. If you are scared of them because they seem complex and confusing, now is the time to take the leap and sink your teeth into learning about them.

10. Start a blog

It’s the best way to boost SEO, and it’s a whole heap of new content that you can post on social media. If you don’t have a blog, 2017 is your year. There’s no better time, so get writing!
